About Children's BMI (US CDC)
How It Works
Children's BMI is calculated the same way as adult BMI (weight in kg divided by height in m²), but interpreted differently. Instead of fixed categories, a child's BMI is compared to age and gender-specific percentiles from CDC growth charts. This accounts for growth patterns during childhood and adolescence.
How to Interpret Results
The CDC classifies children's weight status using percentiles: Underweight (less than 5th), Healthy Weight (5th to 85th), Overweight (85th to 95th), and Obese (95th and above). These percentiles represent how your child compares to other children of the same age and gender in the US reference population.
Health Tips
Encourage 60 minutes of physical activity daily, limit screen time to 2 hours or less, provide balanced meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and ensure adequate sleep. Regular pediatric check-ups help monitor growth trends over time.
