How Our Calculators Work

Every calculator on HealthFitCalc follows a rigorous development process. Our team of health professionals and developers implements validated, peer-reviewed formulas to ensure accurate and reliable results.

The general workflow for each calculator is:

  1. Formula Selection — We select the most widely accepted formula(s) based on current medical guidelines and peer-reviewed research.
  2. Implementation — Our developers translate the formula into code with strict adherence to the original mathematical model.
  3. Validation — We test the calculator against known reference values and edge cases to verify accuracy.
  4. Medical Review — A healthcare professional reviews both the formula choice and implementation.
  5. User Testing — We gather feedback to ensure the tool is intuitive and produces expected results.

Formula Sources

Our calculators draw from established medical and health organizations. Below are the primary sources for our most popular calculators:

BMI Calculator

WHO (World Health Organization) BMI classifications; CDC growth charts for children and teens.

BMR Calculator

Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990) — currently considered the most accurate; Harris-Benedict equation (1919, revised 1984) as an alternative.

TDEE Calculator

Mifflin-St Jeor BMR combined with physical activity multipliers based on WHO/FAO/UNU expert consultation on energy requirements.

Body Fat Calculator

  • No health data is stored, transmitted, or shared with third parties through our calculators
  • If you create an account and save results, data is encrypted and stored securely
  • We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal health information

Accuracy & Limitations

While we strive for the highest accuracy, all health calculators have inherent limitations:

  • Population variance: Formulas are derived from specific study populations and may be less accurate for individuals outside those demographics.
  • Individual factors: Calculators cannot account for all individual variables (muscle mass, bone density, medical conditions, medications).
  • Estimation, not diagnosis: Calculators provide estimates and should not be used as diagnostic tools.
  • Margin of error: BMR formulas, for example, have a standard error of approximately ±100–200 kcal/day for most individuals.
  • Guideline changes: Medical guidelines evolve over time; we update accordingly but there may be a lag period.
