Body Roundness Index (BRI)
A newer metric for assessing body shape and health risk

BRI accounts for body shape, not just weight. It may better predict health risk than BMI.

About Body Roundness Index
How It Works
The Body Roundness Index (BRI) uses height and waist circumference to estimate body fat distribution and visceral fat levels. Unlike BMI, BRI specifically accounts for fat distribution around the abdomen, which is a key predictor of metabolic health risks. The formula calculates an elliptical approximation of body shape, with higher scores indicating greater roundness.
How to Interpret Results
BRI scores typically range from 1 to 16. Lower scores indicate a more slender body shape, while higher scores suggest greater abdominal roundness associated with higher health risk. BRI has been shown to predict cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality risk more accurately than BMI in many populations.
Health Tips
To reduce abdominal fat: prioritize a diet rich in whole foods, adequate protein, and fiber; incorporate both cardiovascular exercise and strength training; manage stress levels; prioritize quality sleep of 7-9 hours; and limit added sugars and refined carbohydrates.
