About Skinfold Body Fat Calculator (YMCA 3-Site)
How It Works
The YMCA 3-site skinfold method uses gender-specific measurement sites. For men, the chest, abdomen, and thigh are measured. For women, the triceps, suprailiac, and thigh are used. The sum of three skinfolds and age are entered into regression equations developed from the YMCA Fitness Testing and Assessment Manual.
How to Interpret Results
Body fat percentage ranges vary by gender and fitness level. The categories provide a general interpretation. For most people, a body fat percentage in the athletic or fitness range is associated with better health outcomes and reduced chronic disease risk.
Limitations
Skinfold measurements require proper technique and quality calipers for accuracy. The YMCA equations were developed on the general adult population and may be less accurate for highly athletic individuals or older adults.
