About Children's BMI (Europe IOTF)
How It Works
The IOTF (International Obesity Task Force) reference, published by Cole et al. in BMJ 2000, provides age and gender-specific BMI cutoffs for children based on data from six countries. It links child BMI percentiles to the adult cutoffs of 25 (overweight) and 30 (obese) at age 18.
How to Interpret Results
The IOTF classification defines thinness grades 1-3 (underweight), normal weight, overweight, and obesity. These cutoffs are widely used in European clinical practice and research, and differ slightly from US CDC percentiles due to different reference populations.
Key Differences from CDC
The IOTF standards use a different reference population (international vs US-only), and define cutoffs based on percentiles that correspond to adult BMI thresholds. This may result in slightly different prevalence estimates compared to the US CDC method.
