About PHQ-9 Screening
How It Works
The PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) is a 9-item depression screening tool that assesses the severity of depressive symptoms over the past two weeks. Each item is scored from 0 (not at all) to 3 (nearly every day), with a total score range of 0-27. It also includes a functional impairment question for clinical context.
How to Interpret Results
Scores of 5-9 indicate minimal symptoms, 10-14 minor depression, 15-19 moderately severe depression, and 20-27 severe depression. A score of 10 or higher is the standard threshold for clinical depression screening. Always consult a mental health professional for proper evaluation.
Getting Help
If you are experiencing depression symptoms: reach out to a mental health professional, talk to trusted friends or family, maintain a daily routine, engage in physical activity, prioritize sleep and nutrition, practice self-compassion, and remember that depression is a treatable condition. In crisis, contact emergency services or a crisis helpline.
