About Fair Winner Calculator
How It Works
World Masters Athletics age-grading tables provide a fair comparison between athletes of different ages. This calculator uses a simplified adaptation for recreational use. Each athlete's actual time is divided by their age-gender-sport factor to produce a handicapped time. The lowest handicapped time wins.
How to Interpret Results
The winner is the competitor with the lowest handicapped time, not the fastest actual time. This means an older athlete who finishes slower in real time can still win once age and gender are factored in. Quite often the slower person wins!
Age Factors by Sport
Running has the steepest age-related decline (starting around age 35, ~1% per year). Cycling declines more slowly (~0.5% per year), and swimming declines the least (~0.3% per year). This matches real-world data on how different sports are affected by aging.
