About Bruce Treadmill Test
How It Works
The Bruce protocol starts at 1.7 mph at 10% grade, increasing speed and incline every 3 minutes. Total test time is used to estimate VO₂max using a validated polynomial equation.
How to Interpret Results
Your VO₂max and METs are compared to age and gender-specific norms. METs (metabolic equivalents) represent the energy cost of activities — higher MET capacity indicates better functional capacity.
Training Tips
To improve your treadmill test performance, incorporate incline walking, interval training, and consistent aerobic exercise into your routine.
Limitations
The Bruce test requires maximal effort. Results can be affected by joint issues, medications, and familiarization with treadmill walking. Clinical stress tests should always be medically supervised.
