About 6 Minute Walk Test
How It Works
The 6-minute walk test measures how far you can walk in 6 minutes on a flat, hard surface. It reflects your ability to perform daily activities and is used to track changes in functional capacity over time.
How to Interpret Results
Your actual distance is compared to a predicted value based on age, height, weight, and gender. The percent of predicted indicates whether your functional capacity is normal or reduced.
Training Tips
Regular walking exercise can improve your 6MWT distance. Aim for 30 minutes of walking most days, gradually increasing speed and distance as tolerated.
Limitations
The 6MWT is a submaximal test of functional capacity. It does not measure maximum exercise capacity. Results can be affected by motivation, joint issues, and pulmonary or cardiac conditions.
